My goal here is to make a pattern incorporating all the characters in the Super Smash Bros series (so basically the full roster of the 3DS/Wii U game plus the cut characters from previous versions). I've looked up the sprites that people have made, and I'm not entirely happy with those, so I decided to make my own. I'm not a professional spriter by any means, but I like dabbling in it, and figured it was worth a shot.
I don't have a final layout decided, but I imagine it as just a plain white background with the characters clumped together according to series (all the Mario characters together, all the Pokemon together, etc). I'm also thinking about doing some of the bosses, like Master Hand, above them, and possibly a logo. That's all subject to change though, I'm mainly just worried about getting the characters done first.
So far I've made 26 sprites, so I have all the characters from Melee done, and I'll be moving on to the Brawl newcomers next. Here's what I've got:

Normal size

Zoomed (x4)
So... I have a few things to say about these. First of all, they're being designed with stitching in mind, and not just as normal sprites that you might see in a game. In other words, there's a lot of implied back stitching that isn't seen here, and they'd make a lot more sense with that. For instance, Pikachu has no mouth, some of the more detailed human characters have no facial features at all, some benefit greatly from outlining, etc.
Also, most are being based off various artwork and models from other games, but I've been updating them to look like the SSB4 models whenever there's any differences. I'm trying as much as possible to avoid the stock poses from the SSB series, but there's a few (Zelda, for instance) where it's hard to find any other decent poses. I don't want them to be too crazy, but I'm trying to avoid having too many that are just standing there without any kind of personality.
I think Ganondorf and Roy are probably the hardest to understand just by looking at the current sprite without backstitching for outlines. Ganondorf is doing one of his taunts, where he basically punches his open hand. Roy is turned sideways, with his right shoulder visible, and his left arm behind his right one. It's based on this artwork, if that wasn't a good enough explanation. http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2 ... 92/Roy.png
One other thing I wanted to mention here is that while I'm trying to be mindful of how many colors I'm using, I haven't attempted to match these to actual thread colors. From personal experience, I know there's not as many shades of gray as I'd like there to be, so some of these (like Mewtwo) kind of concern me. If anyone has any advice on how to deal with that, it would be appreciated.
So... here's the stuff that has to be added to the individual characters. Feel free to ignore this, since it's a lot to read, but I wanted to have it listed for the sake of completion.

Thoughts and advice are definitely welcome! I'm hoping to not have to completely redo any of these (small tweaks are fine), but if people think they look bad, I'll do what I need to.
Also, any opinions on where I should draw the line in terms of alts? In SSB4, Bowser Jr. has 7 different Koopaling alts, Olimar has Alph, and several characters have gender swaps. I don't mind doing those, I'm just worried about the final project being too cluttered.
