Backstitch Pattern Making (One Piece)

I thought I would give backstitch patern making a go. I have always thought that backstitch could help capture the drawing style of anime a lot better than thick blocky outlines (unless you make HUGE patterns). So far the results look promising. I know the drawback is that it is hard to fill evenly with colour (with all the weird shapes).

Has anyone else tried this sort of thing before? What do people think?

What if you put this on a nice piece of coloured Aida? Then it might not need to be coloured in.

I was thinking of doing something like this for a Spider-Man project I've been wanting to stitch for my son.

I really like the style! You could try filling it in with blackwork perhaps? Or (this might sound really weird) what about gluing the area you wanted to colour (eg trousers) and sticking small coloured beads to it, and then doing similar to other areas (tops etc) when areas near to it had dried? I have no idea if it would work well or not...

Frankly, I think leaving it as unfilled line art would be more aesthetically pleasing; filling it might detract from the clean lines and the really well-done sense of motion.

I'd also suggest doing this on evenweave rather than aida, if you haven't already thought about that, since the backstitching is very detailed and fiddly.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I have thought about leaving it as an outline, but I don't want to dismiss colour without giving it a go. Yes, I think working on evenweave would be nicer, but I don't really know where to get it, and I have a lot of Aida lying around, and on a student budget I am used to making do with what I have. I thought of filling in the colour embroidery style rather than cross-stitch style, but I have absolutly no experience in this area. The bead idea sounds interesting, but I don't think it is the look I am going for.

I am currently working on a bunch of other projects, so don't think I will start this for a while, but it will happen!

I think embroidery (or backstitch) with the colour in crayon on the fabric looks really nice

You could do the backstitch in color. Blue for the jeans etc. That might look awesome! You can also outline the figures in a water soluble marker and then paint the fabric using this tutorial. http://weelittlestitchescrossstitch.blo ... cloth.html I've been thinking of doing that to a piece myself.

I love the idea of stitching the outlines and then painting the inside with watercolor. I've seen it done before and it turns out like a miraculous work of art! If I find the picture of it, I'll post.
