First attempt at stitching on felt (and other bits)

Post by toobusytostitch »

I spotted a lovely pattern in a recent magazine for making some felt baby booties with Rudolph on the toes. Before I actually try to make those I decided to have a practice at stitching on felt using waste canvas as I have never stitched on felt before and never used waste canvas before! I am pretty pleased with how it worked out but realised after I finished I should have been using 3 strands of thread not just the 2 I had used!!! Good job I did a trial run!

I have also got carried away stitching a load of Butterflies from some patterns in a book I have. I have done these as individual items to use on cards/keyrings etc but I have also bought a frame with multiple apertures and am planning to stitch a load together to go in it. It will make a change stitching something for myself to keep!

I love the butterflies! I may or may not be obsessed :) What book did you get the patterns from?

And I personally LOVE using waste canvas. I find that I have more options than with aida or perforated plastic though I have not used it on felt yet, I usually use regular fabric. My favorite is using it to embellish my quilt squares. I am also making a pillow at the moment using the same stuff. It is a wonderful thing!! Are you using the kind with the threads that pull out individually or the kind that you use water?

The book is called "Cross Stitcher Handmade Cards" - it's like a mega thick magazine but I got it in the books section of WHSmith so I call it a book! There are 19 butterflies in the set (3 mini ones and the rest are larger). The design says to stitch on 14 count but for most of them I used 16 count as I think it just made them look sharper. The big orange and grey one is on 14 count.

I've used the waste canvas where you pull the threads. I have got some of the soluble canvas to try too but wasn't sure how the felt would react with getting wet.

Thanks RDMC - without the backstitching they look rubbish then as you start the backstitching it's like they come to life! I really love backstitching for doing that!

Those are all beautiful! I'm not into butterflies, but I could be with some of those. Good job.

I've got that pattern, too (the rudolph one) - it looks really good!

Is the Cross Stitcher Handmade Cards book good? I've seen it in the newsagents, but it was all covered so I couldn't have a flick through. :/
Working on:
Retro X & Y! - lost the pattern and fabric, but it's resurfaced :D ...and i've lost it again lol
Attempting Diamond Painting
Making like three crochet blankets at once #nolife
slowly amassing floss for the old-style Epic Pokemon
