Question about making magnets!

Post by DuckyBelkins »

I was cross-stitching pokemon images on plastic canvas to piece them together, back to back, to make into keychains much like the piplup one that was made during the swap.

Anyway, the way I was piecing them together looked really ugly and clumsy and it suddenly hit me that I could have turned these into magnets the whole time!!

So my question is, how do you put the magnet onto the back of the piece? Do you put something between the thread and the magnet first? Do you just put the magnet straight onto the back of the piece/threads? Does it matter that the back of my pieces are super messy? Should I use magnet sheets and cut out shapes of the images (which I'm really bad at) or use the magnets that come in the roll?

I really just want this to be sturdy and functional.

You can just glue magnets straight on to the back (over the threads is fine) - as long as you use a good strong glue it'll be fine. Also, doesn't really matter if the back is messy, you mostly won't see it anyway, but you could always cover it with some felt or something :D

I use sheets of pre-sticky magnets and cover up my admittedly horrible looking back with it and then kind of cut it out. it's never perfect but as long as the magnet part is approximately the right shape, it works.

you could definitely use hot glue or something to glue a piece of magnet on the back too though. either way would work~ i'm just far too prone to gluing myself with krazy glue or burning myself on a hot glue gun to go that route, lol.

I agree with BMH and Stardrifter. I've made magnets before and you just need to make sure you use a strong glue, but not a glue that will seep into the threads (like superglue, epoxy resins, etc), I use a hot glue gun.
