Any tips at all on this would be great, I'd like to do an 8-bit Link blanket.

Making a Crochet Blanket with squares
I've seen quite a few blankets that were crochet (crocheted?) with lots of squares. I was wondering how you get a nice even taut square that doesn't curl. I know it has something to do with tension, but how do you get perfect tension each time?
Any tips at all on this would be great, I'd like to do an 8-bit Link blanket.

Curling sometimes happens naturally depending on the stitch you're making. If you're doing straight back and forth rows, the first few tend to curl in at the edges. Once you have enough rows it usually flattens back out.
If it IS a tension problem then tension is all in how you hold the working yarn. Holding the yarn tighter = a tighter crochet. Holding it loosely gives more slack and makes it a looser crochet. Once you find the best way for you to hold the yarn, you can pay attention to how tightly you're holding the yarn.
It comes with practice, really.
Worst case: there's always blocking :<

What's a good stitch to use when making lots of little squares?
And I'm not sure how to block, is there an easy way to explain that?

Haha I only sadfaced blocking because I'm ULTRA lazy.
The quilty block afghans I see tend to be done in double crochet stitches. Correct me if I'm wrong, I've never made one :o But I'm sure it's all preference. You just do stitches til the block is the size you want it to be. Rinse, repeat in different colors.

Re: Making a Crochet Blanket with squares
I made a Yoshi crochet blanket that consisted of lots and lots of little crocheted squares that were sewn together. I indeed used double crochet stitches and did not have a problem with them curling up. I think it also depends on the type of yarn you use. Most of my yarn was quite rough, but one color was a different type of yarn, much softer, and I got a bit of curling there, though not enough to be an issue.
With these types of blankets with lots of little squares I don't think it matters if they curl. Once you sew them all together they will flatten each other out, if you understand what I mean
If you have any more questions, just let me know

Re: Making a Crochet Blanket with squares
Would that not depend on how big you want the quilt, what the design is like, the gauge of the thread, how many blocks across you want, how much time you want to spend.... I could go on.
I think there is no right answer on this and every project is going to be different. I would figure out how many blocks across you need for your design, then figure out how big you want the blanket to be. Divide total length by number of blocks and you'll find out how big your blocks need to be.
