Mario themed cake

I've been browsing this site for about a week now and I decided I wanted to show off my craft, cake decorating!

So the story goes; I'm at work and a woman comes in with a Mario image and a Yoshi figurine that she wanted turned into an edible image and put on a cake. All she needed was the cake to have this collage she'd made put on it and a message written on it, but I couldn't just leave this awesome image just sitting on a white cake so I turned it into this...

How do you get an edible image? I've seen them on many cakes and have often wondered what it's made of and how it's done.
