This little lady looks fantastic. (At least I think the god bird is usually female. I know in DQVIII you got the soul of her son to fly around with.)
Looking at the closeup I recognize the stitch, or remember reading about it anyway. I need to get me one of those books. I'll start checking out the used book stores soon.
Yeah, the white canvas sucks big time. I can't see any good reason to use it. The only place I can find it is Michaels and there's only one inside the city and it takes at least two trains to get to it. Last time I went I bought every sheet they had. The Joann Fabrics that's not too far away only stocks the white two-pack and a couple of larger counts.
I'm looking forward to making a more complicated 16-bit character for myself once I finally finish up the first game's cross stitch. Now that I'm done with my holiday stuff, I can finally get back to them.

Do you have Hobby Lobby in Chicago? They carry the clear canvas, although it's almost twice as expensive as Michael's last I checked (it comes in the 2 pack at HL, or at least here it does).benjibot wrote:This little lady looks fantastic. I looked for my stitching encyclopedia to get the name of the background stitch, but I think I must have packed it and I can't seem to find it by clicking on random stitches on websites. If you can see it, it just alternates between long and short stitches on a diagonal...very time consuming since I used small stitches, but very easy to do.
You may already know this, but I think Woodus' Dragon Den is the best resource for DQ sprites. My favorite page so far has been some remixed version of Dragon Warrior Monsters I and II, even though I've never played either, the sprites are very bold and colorful and represent common DQ monsters. I got the God bird from this page (under Ramia) and I've already started one of the Face Tree.
After I move, I'm going to order persian wool online and try to finally make a pillow of one of these things...that was the whole idea from the start, but I got kind of sidetracked by the framed art and the fact I don't know how to sew.

Re: Dragon Quest - Ramia Needlepoint
I've started to play Dragon Quest I in emulation with the fan translation. The really fun thing about that one is the translators made two different versions: one in the American NES "thee" and "thou" style with Erdrick and whatnot and one in a more direct translation from the Japanese with Roto and all that. I can't decide which one I'd rather play.
What I should really do is play that version of Dragon Quest II because I've never finished it. Or find a copy of the Game Boy Color one, but the GBC just had an off look to it. I managed to find Dragon Quest III for Game Boy complete in a GameStop. I still can hardly believe that.
I think there are Hobby Lobbies out in the suburbs. I seem to recall a fellow cross-stitcher mentioning them and she lives somewhere out in that wilderness. Out near IKEA—nice place to get some decent frames on the cheap—there's a Michaels and, I think, a Hobby Lobby.
I've mentioned this a number of times, but I still find it amusing how my sense of distance has changed since moving to such a big city. I used to think nothing of driving miles to get anywhere, but now anything over 10 miles feels like a tremendous distance.
