Dragon Quest - Ramia Needlepoint

Post by onechordwonder »

This bird shows up in the Dragon Quest games, often with different names and looks, but the "goddess bird" concept remains generally the same. I've never played this particular game (the original Dragon Quest monsters, I believe, though this is a remastered sprite for a version never released in the US), but I liked the sprite quite a bit.

This looks really good, I really like the detailing on the body, the definition is amazing. Did you use full or half stitches for this? Looks like half to me.

Wow, that's really cool. I've never played a Dragon Quest game, but that looks really nice. The frame is nice too

Thanks.

I used half. I never use actual cross stitches for some reason.

Here's a detail shot:

I'm sure you said it in your tutorial...how many strands is that? 3?

I used all 6 strands for the bird and 3 strands for the background. This is the first time I've used less than all the strands, and it turned out ok.

I tried using 3 strands on my Blobert needlepoint. I didn't find that it provided enough coverage, though I was using up some of the white canvas I bought when I couldn't find clear. I'm going to try 3 strands again on clear later.

Does it make the subject pop out? I was looking at some finished things before the background went on and I really liked how puffy they looked and I'd like them to really stand out.

I'm totally in awe with this project. It really looks amazing! I'm starting to fall in love with the 6 strand half stitch method too. I'm currently doing a half stitch project, so will post soon.

Hey thanks guys. These things always sink like a stone in most forums, so it's always nice to hear good things.

Benji - yeah, I don't like white canvas at all. I gave in and used some once because the closet Michael's to me seems to have given up on ever restocking the clear and I had trouble getting proper coverage even with the full 6 strands. I didn't have any problems with 3 strands on the clear - so long as no light is shining from behind it anyway. It does pop a bit more with the 3 strand background - I like the convex curve the sprites take on too. I'll probably continue using 3 strands for backgrounds, especially since the backgrounds always eat up so much thread.

Oh, and a possible solution should you ever find yourself with bad coverage: I once used a vertical stitch for a blue background and it didn't cover well at all, but i just put a piece of blue felt behind it in the frame and it looked fine.
