I go 5 squares over, 5 squares under, 5.... I saw Ishtar did this in the Charity Quilt 2013 thread and I thought it was a really great idea and used the same trick!
Glad I could be a bit of inspiration
That is my form of a grid on a small piece where I will be doing 'floating' starts and need to make sure I start in the right boarder spot (blah, blah).
Was also a help to make sure I started in the actual middle of it. Fold in half both ways, tiny bullseye in middle, then counted out 48 in each direction.
I really like the duel project idea. Will be interesting to see it projress

Nice, I'm glad to see you're back at it. I've been really busy with the portrait challenge myself but should get done today.
Unfortunately, after that cross-stitch will need to be put on the back burner as we're moving into our house in 2 months and there's SO much to plan... (renovation, shopping furniture and material, bank appointments, boxing stuffs, cleaning, etc, etc) >_<
Current projects :
Out of commission after surgery until May.
Currently playing : Speed runs of Biohazard HD Remaster
I'm pretty happy with the skin tones and the lighter green, but the darker green is too dark! >_< I couldn't find a better alternative though. Oh well, once it's all put together, I'm sure it will look awesome!

These are both looking really awesome. And I think the color choices are very accurate. I wish I was that good at matching sprite colors. I'm still a newbie at doing cross stitch projects without patterns to tell me exactly what should be used. I compare what both PC Stitch and KG Chart suggest, but even then I often pick something else entirely. I'm kind of inclined to get all OCD about it and obsess and debate with myself over my color choices endlessly, and I'll still end up a little disappointed with my choice after it's stitched and ends up looking way off. I swear, colors can look so different in the skein or on a bobbin from when they're stitched! And that's not even getting into how colors can look completely wrong before stitching or even after stitching but then perfect when the project is farther along.

Based on what you just said, I'd say you are doing it right!
