Purposefully frayed edges (how to?)

I saw this entry for March's challenge, and I've seen people finish their work this way before, but how? Do pull out the strings one by one (kinda like waste canvas--I think...)? How do you keep more from coming out? I think this is a great way to finish off bookmarks, but I don't want them to fall apart...any tips?

I've always done it by sewing (with a machine) down the lines I want to fray up to and then pulling out the threads til I meet the stitching.

I just pulled the threads out and then put some Fray-Check along the edges that I frayed up to. I don't know how well it'd stand up to being used for something like a bookmark, I honestly don't know what to do with that little thing now that it's done, lol.
