Unconventional method to make blanket?
I want to make a yarn pixel blanket, but I don't have the patience at the moment to use the conventional methods, such as crocheted granny squares, etc.
Is there a quick & dirty, yet unique way to braid or knot the yarn to create squares? If so, I think it would be interesting to learn.
Any ideas?

I went to Hobby Lobby yesterday on my way home from my workplace. I bought something called "The Butterfly Loom". Seems to be exactly what I need.

i wanted to do something similar but i didnt want to use granny squares or solid granny squares as it leaves rasied edges betweeen each square so i made it just using single crochet and counting the stitches and rows in order to make it a pixelated picture.
this is what it came out as and im quite happy with it.

I looked up the butterfly loom. It looks kinda cool and easy to use. Might consider getting one.

I considered using single crochet, but I don't think I'm very good at counting because somehow the sides don't stay straight. I become confused when I finish a row and turn to go back the opposite direction. Are you supposed to chain 1 at the end of the row, or just turn and keep stitching? In case you can't tell, I'm not a very experienced crocheter. ;-)
By the way, I love your Mario blanket. That's actually what I'm going to make, but mine is going to be the retro brown & red Mario. I picked up some extra yarn just in case. Any tips you can give will be greatly appreciated!!!

Depending on where you shop, the "As seen on TV" Butterfly Loom can be a bit pricey. My local Hobby Lobby was selling the Medium (they have different sizes) Loom for $17 USD, but I had a 40% off coupon, so I got it for around $10 USD. I don't believe my blanket will look as pretty as sparky's though...

yes you chain one at the end of each row. its known as the 'turning stitch'TheDewd wrote:@sparky

hope this helps for future projects
(not dong the turning stitch would cause the edges to not be straight )

Re: Unconventional method to make blanket?
If I plan to single crochet individual squares for each pixel color, what would be the best method to attach the squares together? This is going to be a blanket, so I want it to be durable. Should I just wrap the yarn back & forth between each square? I'm thinking I'd need to do that twice, for extra strength.
