KG Chart Issues

Post by Starchild »

Hello fellow stitchers! Is it such a surprise that I'm in need of help again?

I've been looking for a small side-project to work on when I need a bit of down-time from my Yogg stitch, and I found the perfect image! I charted it, (got rid of all the godsdamned black again  ), but there's a little issue. Here's the picture I'm working from:

And here's it when I've put it into KG (Yes, I'm too stupid to know how to actually upload the .sth file. Please dont judge me. I know I'm an idiot)
Spoiler

Now... most of the image looks damn fine, to me at least. It's only 34 colours, which is a nice step down from Yogg. The only thing is... the red. KG is suggesting that the red is DMC 815 (Cherry Red) which, as you may be able to see, doesnt seem to match with the rest of the image. It stands out somewhat.

I'm not sure how to fix this - I'm not the most artistic of people and I have no honest idea how to fix this. The only option I can think of is to go through every colour and fill it in until I find a red that looks right. Is there a better way to do this?

Any advice is massively appreciated, thank you.
No rest. No mercy. No matter what.

Which areas of the picture have the 815?
Also, have you checked the actual thread colours against your source image?

EDIT: And you upload sth files the same way you upload images, and place it inline :D

The 815 is on the lower legs, some of the mountains, and most obviously on the end of his tail where it goes behind the rock.

I'm not actually sure how to check the actual thread colours. I'm still quite a considerable newbie at all of this

Edit: D'oh!

D'aww. No problem! What I mean by "checking the actual thread colours" is looking at a real life thread and comparing it to the colour in the original image. I'm pretty good at it now because I've had lots of practice, heh :D

So, I see the bits you mean. Because you've simplified the image, it's kinda hard to pick one colour out...but I do think that 815 is wrong. You want a dark orangey-red for those parts. Like a dark terracotta type of colour. Maybe 400, or something like that. (I don't have my colours in front of me right now so I can't be 100% on that.)

Also, be aware that KGChart's on screen representation of the image can be way off, so try not to base your colour choices on what it displays!

Hope I've been of some help :D

You have, thank you =3

I'll likely have quite a bit of a play around with it, and I'll talk to my mum about the real life colour checking. I admittedly only have the colours I need for my Yogg picture, but she's got hundreds stored away. Thank you again ^_^

There are color cards which you can buy which contain a broader range of thread color samples. I saw one in Hobby Lobby for about ten bucks which had the colors printed on laminated cardstock; you can also buy direct from DMC here. I know that there are also color cards (more expensive) which contain actual floss samples. I've seen them available on UK websites, but none in the US, sadly for me.

I also just ran across this chart: http://yarntree.com/075dmccolors.pdf, which I just downloaded. :P
Mostly hibernating here. Find me on Twitter @rmdcade.

If you click the box on the right side of the screen labeled, Selected, it will pull of a list of the colors only used in the pattern. You can right click on a color and change the color of it, and it will change ALL the red color in the pattern to whatever color you select (just type the number of what color you want to change it to, hit enter, and then ok). Just watch to make sure it doesn't affect other areas of the image. As for what color to use, try looking at the attachment I added, and see if the color I highlighted will work for ya!
