Craft Guides / FAQs ~ volunteers wanted!

Post by blackmageheart »

For a while now, I've been thinking about getting some volunteers to assist in the creation of some guides to the various crafts we do here at Sprite Stitch.
I mean beginner's guides, FAQs, tips and tricks, stuff like that. And I know there are a number of guides already here on the forums, but I want to be able to put them all in one place so that they are easy to find - through a sticky or announcement, whatever. Possibly leading up to a PDF containing them all (although that would be later!)
They don't have to be huge, or all-encompassing either - the basics of a craft would be just as helpful.

So, what I really need is volunteers to help put some of these guides together, and also for people to share their tips for the most common problems and frequently asked questions.

Thanks in advance to anyone who steps up! :D

What a fab idea!

I would love to help, but unfortunetly the only thing I am any good at (enough to explain about) would be cross stitching. Whhhich might be too basic!

Are you guys looking for just articles? Or articles with pictures? Or videos?
Working on:
Mini-Swap, Chocobo chart, Mega Man piece
Sewing - 3 different Disappearing 9-Patch quilts

Nothing's too basic, really. We get a lot of new peoples who might like the basics explained to them :D

For now, just looking for people who can do some guides that would help other people :D
Later, pictures and videos will be useful, though!

Maybe splitting things up will get more volenteers since writting one HUGE guide for each craft would be a big commitment. I've made two lists which incorporate a lot of questions I've seen in the year and a half I've been on the board. The lists focus on things I'm familiar with, we'll need more expert help for other mediums.
Software/Image Guides
  • What kinds of images are good for cross stitch?
  • How do I turn my image into a pattern?
  • How do I calculate the finished size?
  • Using Photoshop to prepare my image for a pattern.
  • Tips and Tricks for PC Stitch and KG-Chart
I can help with most of these (except for KG-Chart).

Cross Stitch Guides
  • Choosing and preparing your fabric
  • To hoop or not hoop?
  • Thread basics
  • Making stitches
  • Finishing
I can help with most of these as well...
Another thing I can help with would be a "where do I buy supplies?" guide, at least for the US/internet. My mother has worked in the art supply business for over twenty years and I am very familiar with vendors and where to get supplies of all kinds.

edit: excuses my categorization, studying info management systems will do that to you...

That's what I wanted to do - a bunch of small guides on various aspects of the crafts. With particular focus on the "basics" and the commonly asked things (how do I do x, what is y, etc).
The stuff you've suggested is the just the sort of thing I had in mind - written up as mini-guides I feel they would be a lot more helpful than really long guides.

Hoping to get started on this after the holidays, when people aren't so busy.
I'll start making some lists (volunteers, subjects, etc) so if you have any more ideas I'd love to hear them. Also if anyone wants to volunteer just post in this topic!

I volunteer!
I'm not as good with the technological/computer end of things, but anything involving the crafting would be great. Cross stitching, embroidery, beadwork, perlers, etc.
Just let me know what you need. :nod

We seem to have a good bit of volunteers for cross-stitching so I'll toss my hat in for making a 'Basics of Amigurumi' guide if you like. I've been making patterns for my original creations anyway so it slots right in with things I'm working on at the moment. Unless people wanted more, I'm thinking it would just cover the basics stitches, starter shapes, selecting yarn, and the basics of deconstructing your desired object into a workable design. I'd be open to making one with more advanced techniques as well if there was enough interest, but I'm not sure how many people here like making crochet dolls so I don't know that it would be required.

I'm totally on board! I don't really consider myself an expert in any specific area, but I'm happy to help wherever I can!

Do you know ho long I looked for a nice simple getting started guide when I first wanted to start stitching!?! :banghead: I found tons of advanced things, but it was a lot harder to find a decent beginner's guide - so having a good one here would be totally awesome (and attract new stitchers to the site!)

:good: :clapping: :yahoo: This is the next craft I wan to get into (my fiance is watching me type, and just sighed and shook his head...) so I would be totally psyched to see a Basics of Amigurumi guide!
