Plastic canvas: washing finished projects?

Post by Autumn »

Hey everybody! Just a quick question for those who use plastic canvas: do you wash your projects after they're completed? I'm concerned with the oils from my hands hanging around on my stitches, but I'm nervous to do the usual soak-and-rinse with a non-fabric background.

Any input is appreciated!

Never done it myself (being a plastic canvas noob) but it's plastic so I can't see there being any problems with it being in liquid. I'd maybe wash before you trim down the plastic canvas (if you haven't already) but perhaps one of the more seasoned plastic canvas users could give some better advice!

Thanks for the input, BlackMageHeart -- as always. :)

What I'm concerned about is that the plastic canvas won't shrink. When you use fabric canvas and thread, they might shrink somewhat, but they'll shrink together. I'm worried that the stitches might constrict but the plastic won't, possibly causing some distortion.

I'm starting to think this isn't something to be too worried about, though.

I've never washed mine, but if you're worried you can use cleaning wipes. Just make sure that they're unscented and be very gentle. I've just dabbed lightly on the thread, and it took off the dirt marks.
These should work:

Thanks for the reply, Purcell! I opted to let it go unwashed. I'm glad to hear you've done the same; it makes me feel more confident in my choice. :D
