But I have little question I think you guys would be well versed. I have a whole bunch of picutres I want to turn into cross stitch patterns. What kinds of programs/techniques could I use?

KG Chart is free and seems to work pretty well - you can get it here: http://www.iktsoft.net/kgchart-en/kgchart/

If I had to guess, I'd say it's the program the most people on here use, on account of it being free and others being $50 or I think even $80. I have used it and generally been pretty pleased with the results, though I would always advise checking over the patterns to make sure the colors it chooses are the best choice. Also, it's worth noting that I think sometimes the color it displays on your screen is not very representative of the actual DMC color. Overall though, it's pretty solid.
Current Projects: Legend of Zelda Magnet Set, Mario Kart coasters (50% done - Mario and Peach finished, Yoshi and Luigi or Toad pending)
Finished Projects: Assorted Coasters, Mega Man 2 Robot Master Magnets, Angry Birds Magnets
