Need some help on an unusual project

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to create a replica of the new alice in wonderland dress. I've got a made to measure base dress to customise, and I have an idea how to complete most of the transformation but there's one bit I need some help with.
At the bottom of the dress you can see there's some embroidery of different woodland animals, what do you think is the best way of doing this?
Some people have suggested using rubber stamps but I really want to keep it stitched.
Any help appreciated!!!

Hmm... Right now I can only think of waste canvas, but it depends on the fabric you're stitching on. I've used it on cotton (t-shirts and placemats), but if the fabric is too thin or delicate, I doubt it would work. Do you have a sample of the material to experiment with?

I agree with Aelys, waste canvas would be the way to go if you were cross stitching or even backstitching. The dress looks delicate though, like organza or something, so cross stitch probably isn't your friend here. Embroidery stitching is probably best, something like a satin stitch? (Been a LONG time since I did any embroidery lol)
What's your base dress made of?

you could stamp it or draw out the design- which would be the easier part- with a washable ink
and then cross stitch or embroider over it, and wash out said washable ink
kind of like a stamped cross stitch i guess
i dunno if that would work^^;

Thanks Everyone,
The dress I'm having made for it is actually cotton, didn't want anything too delicate as I'm quite clumsy!
I should get it by the end of March so I'll be able to sample the fabric then.
I like the idea of drawing/stamping it out then stitching over it but I SUCK at drawing. I may have to bribe my boyfriend to draw it out for me.

Bribery is an underrated tool
I'd still go for embroidery over the drawn lines though, cross stitching might make it look a little squared, if you know what I mean. Whatever you go for, I'm looking forward to seeing it! Good luck~ ^^

I wasn't going to cross stitch it in the first place as I think freehand embroidery will look a lot better.
Does anyone know of a good source of where I could get the basic shapes from?

The dress came today!
It's quite a basic blue cotton but I'm excited about it

I agree with the others, freehand embroidery sounds like the best plan. I wouldn't know where to start, but if you're good at it give it a try! Good luck and remember to post pictures... a lot of them!
