I have a pattern printed out that calls for 18 count Aida, but when I got to the store they only had 14 in the color I want to use. Can I use the pattern on the 14 without it looking terrible? What would be different?
If it's going to be too big a problem I have the pattern in 14, just not printed, and getting to the library to print is a pain. If I can salvage this, I would like to, but not at the cost of the project looking funky as a result.

You can do it on 14 count. The only major difference is that the physical dimensions of the image will be larger. Apart from that there is no real problem with stitching it on the 14. You won't even need to print a different pattern, because it'll be the same number of stitches and colours etc!
I hope that helps!

Re: 18 vs 14
The only thing is make sure the fabric is big enough for the 14ct version of the pattern.
So for instance a 100x100 stitch pattern on 18 ct fabric will be 5.55 inches x 5.55 inches(100 divided by 18 gives you this figure). That same pattern on 14 ct fabric will be 7.14 inches by 7.14 inches(divide 100 by 14 to get this figure).
So the smaller the count of fabric the larger the image itself will be and vice versa the larger teh count of fabric the smaller the image wil be.
And don't forget to leave yourself about 2 inches of fabric all around the piece for framing(I usually forget this and the framin is a pain in the a**).
Happy stitching!

I have more than enough fabric for the piece in question, even at the larger size, so that's not a problem - I just didn't want to cut it until i was sure everything would work okay. Thanks!
