Tips on stitching onto fabric

Post by Excelle »

I've been following a guide on stitching onto fabric to make some patches. I used Aida on top of felt, and I was told once I had finished I would just be able to tug out the threads of Aida. However, it really does not want to budge! Any tips, or am I just going to have to trim off the excess and make do (hope not :( )

Here's a picture - it's just a QR code for a charity project, although if I can get this to work, then I will probably more onto some proper sprite projects.

Unfortunately, for that one, you're probably stuck with it.

Aida is pretty difficult to pull out - the weaving pattern is pretty solid. Even Hardanger (22 count) is pretty tough to pull out if you've stitched on it, and it's meant to be fairly loose.

What you need is something called WasteCloth.

It's got a VERY loose weave, and is meant to be tugged out after you finish the stitching (provided you don't pull your stitches too tight.

Look towards the bottom of this page

or google it, you'll come up with some ideas about it.

They also have water soluble waste canvas now. You stitch on it and then throw it in water after your done and voila no more waste canvas just your stitches! You can see it here:

Hope this helps! :zelda

***Moved to Techniques/Guides***

I have actually stitched on to felt in the same way that you have. The aida is a little tough to get out, especially if your stitches are tight but it's not impossible. The weave on aida is fairly solid, as thingie1234 said - this is because it's made up of several strands. What you should try is to pull out one strand at a time - don't be scared, pull it firmly and slowly and it *should* come out. It does take a while to do and you have to be patient.

Failing that, if your stitches are gripping the aida too tight, trim the edges right down and nobody will know (except us :P ) :D

Well that's irritating! Ah well, I will have to tidy it up as best I can.

I have now ordered some water soluble canvas off the net - thanks for the advice!
