Fusible backing quilt technique

Post by funkymonkey »

I'm trying my hand at making a pieced pixel pillow (is it still called a quilt if it isn't quilted?) using the fusible backing technique LucyInTheSky used for the stitch-a-long. Tutorial here: http://www.corasquilts.com/tutorials/fusible-backing/

Going to make two 20" pillows, one a Mario mushroom and one a fire flower.

Got the fabric today, and went to town with my rotary cutter. Here's 650+ squares, and the fabric I plan to use for the back:

Has anyone else tried using this technique? It seems like it would be easier with larger squares; hoping mine (18 across the 20 inch pillow) will work out OK. I already had the 906F interfacing from my last quilt, so I may get even further before the end of the day.

Finished the first pillow top. Here's a pic after the horizontal seams:

And, after the vertical seams:

And the back. Soo much ironing. I tried to press the seams over instead of open, but it was still lumpy so I went the slow way.

When I make the second one, I plan to film a video tutorial.

So i decided to make a wall hanging mini-quilt out of this instead of a pillow; not enough empty space around the edges, made it look cut off. So, pinned the sandwich together and was ready to quilt, until i realized in the move, I lost my darning plate for my sewing machine >_<. Ordered another one, but will probably be a week before I can quilt this.

Quilted it in a large zig-zag pattern:

And have finished stitching half of the binding around the edge. Doing this by hand on the back, so it's taking a while.

Are you finding the fusible technique easier, harder, or about the same as a traditional way?

I would say that this was easier than the traditional way. The hardest parts were tracing the lines on the interfacing (my squares were like, 1 7/12 inches to make the finished size i was aiming for... going with 2 inches would have helped the lines a lot.) Also, ironing open the seams on the back. so.. many... seams... it was a pain because there wasn't quite enough of a seam allowance after trimming the edges open so it wanted to fight me the whole time.

I've struggled in the past with lining up the seams, and using this method they came out just perfectly. I recommend it as an entry to pixel quilting.

I have all the squares cut for mini quilt #2, so I will film some video tutorials for my GameCrafts channel as I make it.
