... Only to chalk it up on my (blessedly short) list of 3DS games that were a complete waste of money, alongside New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Pushmo/Pullblox.
I remember when fighting games got big on combo systems. Sure, the Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter games had combos almost by accident, but then a corner was turned in the late '90s. The first combo-heavy game that crossed my radar was Killer Instinct (the SNES version; I pretty much hated the N64 and every damn game it spawned). I really loved Killer Instinct. The combo system made sense to me, since it followed a jan-ken-pon sort of pattern. I don't think any fighter has captured that simplicity since (barring, perhaps, the Smash Bros. series). Fast forward to 201X, when combos are described in terms of single frames and fades and cancels and lags. Count me the frack out.
