I've looked over the pattern and tried a couple different things, I think I know what you're talking about, and it has nothing to do with your pattern making skills. The issue here is the lighting on the original image, and what it's doing when it's pixelated this far down. I'm assuming it was some kind of a sunset shot? Honestly, it's pretty heavily shaded, so you can just do black over the blue and green tints and it wouldn't be that noticable, but i would recommend taking out some of the bright pink highlights on the skin and hair if you can, everything i try is just making a mess. If you have photoshop, you may want to put a little bit of a color filter over the original image and then try entering it again, maybe like a tiny bit of a sepia tint, which should take out some of the wild variations in colors, and would make the whole thing a lot easier.
