Mac OS stitchery

Though I never owned a system that ran it, I'm a big fan of the icons from Mac OS. As in the very first Mac OS.

In designing the first major entirely graphical UI the designer had a pretty steep challenge: how to communicate with users accustomed to text based operating systems using a simple graphic. Some have faded into obsolescence, but many of these have informed further GUI development.

Plus, they look great.

The bomb (this was bad) and watch (still used today in iTunes):

An alert box (application required attention) and the original trash can:

And perhaps most importantly, Clarus the Dogcow:

I remember using an old mac we had and seeing the old icons brings back memories. Great stitching too.

Now that I have a pretty sizable pile of colored fabric I'd like to do some more of these in color. Particularly Clarus. Like a red on pink fabric or something like that.

Also, some of those photos aren't so hot, but I really like the macro on the last one (I never framed it, so I wanted to distract from that).

These are so freaking cool. My dad used to bring these old macs home from work when I was a kid, so these images are close to my heart -- especially Clarus! Yes, the bomb is a very scary image... but not quite as bad as the dead mac icon
