I definitely recommend pre-cut. These rugs take enough commitment, I can't imagine cutting off all 6000 of those pieces before even starting.
That said, if you want to be hardcore, you'll probably have to cut your own. I have not yet made this transition. The issue with pre-cut yarn, aside from its being hard to procure (I can only find it offline at the local Hobby Lobby, and they don't even have black, which really put a damper on this project) is the limited color range. If you have a lot of colors/details and want to maintain texture (different brands feel surprisingly different) there isn't too much to work with as far as pre-cut goes. At this point the more zealous will do some trick with cardboard and scissors where they can cut 6 pieces at a time, but that idea makes me want to hurl.
But hey, if you're feeling ambitious, try playing around with leftsource.com. It lets you upload a picture and returns a pattern for you with yarn count and all. I just recommend simplifying the picture before hand and dropping the resolution super-low unless you want a pattern with sixty colors.

I'm kind of into latch hooking and would love to do this! Is there a pattern?

There is. Feeling crazy, hmm?
Just keep in mind that it's not as symmetrical as it really should be, but I'd wrestled with it so much by this point that I didn't really care about the pattern working, so I just did the first half, then folded the canvas over and marked the second half to match. You may want to do the same. I also added a few extra rows of black on the top and bottom, but that was just preference. Knock yourself out!
Well, knock yourself out within reason. I mean, I just couldn't look myself in the mirror if you finished yours and did something decent with it before I do.
