Super Mario Dresser

Post by Semifrank »

Hey! Cool site, figured I'd like to contribute!

A project I am working on for my son.

Dresser is painted with a blue acrylic based wall paint.. and I hand painted all of the mario stuff with a brush and regular acrylic paints..

yay! Luigi! :Luigi !

I love it, well done! maybe powerups on the drawers? enemies?

I'm afraid if I ever have a son/daughter...decorating a room might be dangerous...

I love the dresser idea! I may do that for a friends daughter. She is absolutely in love with Luigi. What about the other power up symbols for the drawers (star, flower, etc). You could also include some super mario 3 symbols in there

I am not a very good drawer, but it looks like you just copied a print in larger form. Any suggestions for someone that has a hard time drawing?

I have a trick I use to paint art on arcade cabinets...I use an overhead projector (im a teacher so I steal one for the weekend) and project it on the surface, tracce in pencil, then paint.

You could also use a digital projector if you know someone who has one for movies etc...they work well to get that initial outline.

That is a fabulous idea. Now to find a cheap digital projector that I can carry on an airplane.

I think my reply got lost, lemme try this again:

Take the source image and draw a grid between each pixel (photo shop makes this much much easier).
Figure out the height and width of your image (in my case it was 19x40).

Using a ruler I found the center lines of my dresser and then using the ruler and a pencil I marked out lines every inch, 19 across and 40 down.
I connected the lines withthe trusty ruler to make a nice grid.. after that its all about brush technique and getting the colors right!

Update: So I finally got some more work done on the dresser. The drawers had been sitting in my basement with the original coat still on them.
Sanded those down, painted and then finished of the Luigi.

Here is the dresser in its original form:

Lesson learned from previous work: Do colors first, 2 coats, use black (single coat) to make crisp lines. Also, recruit help!

I was a little worried that Luigi was a little monotone compared to mario:

Appaently I was wrong, after spending about 1.5 hours last night inking in the lines, this is the end result!:

What to add next???

Stars and mushrooms or maybe a castle (might not be room for a castle).

zOMFG!
That looks fantastic!!
You should totally do my room next.
lol.
I agree with johloh, maybe you do power-ups or enemies.
Or, if it were me that was doing the painting, I would put Pete Parana Flowers in the pipes, from Super Mario Bros. 3, all along the bottom of each drawer.
Or, how about a bunch of the pipes that they slip into?
Or maybe a whole sort of scene in the game.
I'm just throwing out some ideas.
^w^
