NOTES:
Spoiler
October 14th last year I started work on an idea for a cross-stitch inspired by Disney's animated movie Frozen, this one based off the song "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?". I worked on it for several days, collecting the elements I wanted to create my image, the pattern created out of sprites and background images from various NES games, putting them all together to build a unique scene and to tell a story, something I enjoy very much.

As with most of my compositions, I went through a lot of revisions before settling on what I would be completely satisfied with before I began stitching it.

I started out with two girls, choosing Princess Toadstool from Super Mario Bros. 2, and Roll from Megaman 9 (she is the one exception so far for all my own cross-stitch pieces that is not from an NES game). The snowman came to mind once I had searched through a whole bunch of games (any that I could think of that had snow or ice stages), I settled on the Flurry enemy from Super Mario Bros. 2 as I wanted something that looked like it was being built, as if just the bottom of its body was done so far, makes sense as the title is a question about wanting to build a snowman.

Next I needed some scenery, some trees like pine or spruce, classic winter and Christmas tree types. Surprisingly it didn't take me long to find what I was looking for in the NES game, Cliffhanger (yeah, the one based off the Sylvester Stallone movie). I recolored them as the color choice was very drab, so that they'd match with the colorful characters.

I added the quote, the song title, but still hadn't yet figured out the best font for it, but after a few more edits I found something suitable with the font style used in Deadly Towers.

Now, to find a house to place further in the background. My immediate thoughts went to an ending screen to Megaman 2, feeling something of a cabin or farmhouse would give it that wholesome country look. But there was something about it that didn't quite sit right, first of all it looked like a postcard, but more so, made the Princess seem out of place.

I added in some music notes above Princess Toadstool to show that she was singing. A heart above Roll, being excited, happy to join in with her friend. Threw in an Albatoss in the sky, nah, shot that bird down real quick. How about some other characters snowball fighting? Placing Rash from Battletoads and the enemy snowman from that game in the foreground. These two kept appearing and disappearing from this pattern constantly before I decided as I had begun stitching that I wouldn't use them after all.

As with all my customized projects details are very important to me. An idea that hit me was similar to what I had done on an old cornerstone I had done for Nintendo Age some years ago, that one of over a dozen and a half was G.I. Joe the Atlantis Factor. What I ended up with on that one, after many edits, was to make a scene that looked like a comic book cover, and for it to really have that genuine feel I had to have every detail that should be there. I had the UPC barcode thingy, the little square in the top corner showing the company that puts the comic out, even looked up the price of comic books back when that game came out so that could be accurately represented as well. It turned out really nice.

Anyway, my thoughts going back to that sprite composition art I had done, got me thinking about sheet music for the song "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" as I wanted the Princess' singing to be an accurate music note representation of the lyrics being sung. I found the sheet music for it, then using the music notes from Milon's Secret Castle, edited those to create the song. All of the notes are correct including their height to one another, the only thing I did differently was that I angled to bars holding them upward so it looks like the music is flowing up into the sky, plus it looked better than having them so straight. I was so happy with myself.

I needed this to look like a fantasy world though, so started looking for small castle sprites that would look good as a distant background image. I had the perfect one, the intro from Final Fantasy. I found a spot for it, including the island that it rests on. But then I had this blank space of emptiness in between the trees and that castle. Still at the time trying to add those snowball battlers in there, I had also thought up ice skaters, so I filled that void with a frozen lake. I had also thought to add more characters with the two girls, but decided against it, as with the Battletoads ones, too much unnecessary clutter, the focus needed to be on the girls building the snowman.

Still ever one for details, something still felt off about this. One cannot get across snow, at least not normally, without making footprints. I could've easily made those myself, but I try to always find sprites from games first. Only took me a few moments to think up which game to get them from, Gotcha! So I added in some footprints behind both Roll and the Princess, close together for the Princess as she is wearing a dress plus took her time trudging through the snow to the snowman in progress. Yes, Toadstool can levitate, but not today. Roll on the other hand, little girl, very excited, placed her prints further apart as she skipped up the incline between the trees.

There was one more thing off, Roll looked rather comfy, warm in her dress that in that particular sprite I chose makes it look like she is wearing a shawl or poncho or something, but the Princess would freeze her ass off dressed as she was. Okay, so in the game world it don't matter, but this was my world, cartoons and game characters need to keep warm too. First I thought of the mother from Legacy of the Wizard, removing her shawl and trying to make that fit the Princess, but even stretching it, it just didn't look right on her. I thought of Belle from Disney's Beauty and the Beast when she was out in the snow, the beautiful cloak she wore, that's what I needed for the Princess.

It took me a while before it occurred to me to look at the original Japanese game that Super Mario Bros. 2 came from, Doki Doki Panic. I had remembered that one of the characters in that game wore a hooded cape. After a few edits I placed it over the Princess' shoulders, perfect! It fit her nicely. Then I recolored her arms to give the dress long sleeves. Now she is ready to be out there playing in the snow.

As I was typing this up I just realized something wrong about the castle, somehow I forgot to get the center tower. All this time, all those edits, all that time seeing it, stitching it, I wonder how I did that? Anyway, that's what, less than 5 minutes worth of stitching, 7 more stitches. Okay, now I'm done!

Sprite elements used:
Snowman (Flurry - Super Mario Bros 2)
Princess Toadstool (Super Mario Bros 2)
Princess' winter cape (edited - Doki Doki Panic)
Roll (Megaman 9)
Trees and snow (Cliffhanger)
Heart (Super Mario Bros 2)
Music Notes (edited - Milon's Secret Castle)
Ice Castle and island (Final Fantasy)
Footprints (Gotcha!)

NOTES:
Spoiler
A few days ago I decided to get back to stitching after nearly 2 months hiatus since the last project I finished. The project I am currently working on now is another composition, a pattern created using various elements from a bunch of different NES games, putting them all together to make a unique picture. This one, an idea inspired by fantasy, magical places and mystical beasts, a Unicorn Forest. So far I've stitched in all of the white of the unicorn's body.

When I first started out I was merely just playing around with a sprite of a horse taken from a Famicom horse racing game, Keiba Simulation, trying to turn it into a pegasus or unicorn, then into an alicorn, but then something broader came to mind, a scene, first much like from the 80s fantasy movie Legend, but changed shape to something more my own.

I found my horn using the blade of a sword from the NES game Willow. Surely I could have easily created the horn from scratch but the whole point is to try to use what is available and make it work together with minimal editing or self-created pieces, these have to be pieces from NES games. The Wonder Sword worked nicely as a horn, even though I'd edit it some, as I do when I need to.

I needed a background, trees, someplace deep, a dark forbidden place where few have ever seen. Two games came to mind with jungle settings, the first being a stage out of Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom, the other from Gargoyle's Quest II. I placed the unicorn over the deep forest background, ovals of light penetrating between twisting trunks, with strange plants or mushrooms clustering around.

Sure, just the unicorn within this dark forest would be fine as was but always ever there has to be more, the scene is set but its too empty. I imaged beams of light shining down through the treetops, as well as mist, fireflies, other forms of life. I got the mist rather easily since I have another project that has been sitting in limbo for a while which used it but figured it'd be perfect for this one. I don't even remember where I got the mist from, can't recall the game nor what, clouds perhaps.

Originally I was going to place lots of leaves and flowers in the foreground, take from Gargoyle's Quest II, but with the imagining of rays of light the leaves would be perfect on the trees instead of as bushes. The leaves were set but still where could I find the beams of light? The Little Mermaid! The very first stage of the game drops Ariel into the coral sea close to the surface, light shining down into the water. These light beams were the most challenging detail to add which I also had to edit quite a bit. What I wanted was a beam shining on the unicorn as well as at least one in the background coming down between the leaves overhead. Always one for accuracy, I lightened up anything in its path as well as the unicorn's outline.

What was still missing though was something else in the foreground. Originally I thought either a princess reaching out to touch the unicorn the same as Lily did in Legend, but also played with the idea of goblins surrounding it but didn't like the certain gruesome outcome envisioned with that encounter. Seeing the mushrooms in the background it'd only make sense to have some more closer to the viewer. I picked out the giant mushrooms from the forest stage in the NES game Magician. Okay, better, but still it felt nothing more than a unicorn all alone here.

When I started working on this project I had also begun another prior to it but only got as far as placing a faerie atop a mushroom. The unicorn needed another magical being to watch over it. Since I already had a bunch of faerie sprites collected from various NES games it wasn't hard to find the perfect choice, Cutie from the game Astyanax. I sat her atop it. Ta-dah!

Still one more detail missing, I said that I wanted fireflies or something sparkling within the darkened forest, or perhaps more faeries, seeing only in their magical light. Sure, I could have simply made it easy on myself and drawn in dots or crosses of bright pixels scattered about, but as I said, I gotta use game sprites. After a time searching I ended up using the sparks from Balloon Fight, though opted out of over-cluttering the scene, a couple of those did nicely. My scene is done, the Unicorn Forest.

Here is a pic of all of the game elements used as well as the composed pattern made up of each, some minor editing to details or colors as I felt needed to make it all work in harmony as if they were meant to be together.

Unicorn (originally just a white horse) - Keiba Simulation
Unicorn's horn (Wonder Sword edit) - Willow
Forest background - Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom
Leaves atop trees - Gargoyle's Quest II
Large Mushrooms - Magician
Faerie - Astyanax
Faerie lights - Balloon Fight
Rays of sunlight - The Little Mermaid
Mist (and totally can't recall what game I got this from) - ?

Extra Notes:

2014-10-24
6:00pm-6:30pm - just found my worst mistake ever I accidentally stitched an extra pixel of mist in front of the unicorn's rear feet, so all mist as well as vegetation after that point is over one space more than it should all be.

I just finished the cross-stitch I started a week ago. This ornate jewel I took from the Famicom game Little Magic and edited, adding more colors to enhance its beauty before I started stitching on the little bit of plastic canvas I had.

My original idea was to make a hair clip out of it, still not sure about that but it got me stitching it anyway. As I was in the middle of stitching I thought to do something different with this piece, something I have been wanting to do for a while on a few previous projects but never did, add some layers to give it more depth.

So I cut out a couple of blocky oval shapes the exact shape and sizes I needed to round out that green jewel. I wasn't sure it'd turn out as I imagined since I've never done this before, but being a simple shape and not too large an area to stitch, figured it wouldn't hurt to try.

It turned out beautifully! Exactly as I hoped for, the couple layers really making that jewel stand out within its intricate housing. Currently I have it dangling next to a couple other cross-stitches I had done on plastic canvas.

As for whether I do anything else with it, seems too big for a hair clip so perhaps it'd look nice stitched onto my handbag. I'll think about it. Right now it looks fine right where I can see it every day while I sit at my laptop.

Anyway, since it turned out so well with the 3D jewel I am definitely looking to used this method again for another future project, not sure what yet, but if I see an opportunity I'm certainly going to do it.

Altogether this piece is 1316 stitches and took me just several minutes shy of 10 hours to complete. A total of 12 different colors were used and pattern measures at fullest 50 x 65 pixels (3.57" x 4.64")

Re: Miss Clawful's Cross-Stitch Projects

Post by Miss Clawful »

A couple years ago I come across the girl in the Famicom game Moon Crystal and though, you know with a little bit of editing I could change her to look like Princess Toadstool. Dress, arms, face would only need a color change, the hard part would be getting her hair right as well as crafting a crown. I dabbled in some attempts over time but never was able to even get the flip in her hair right, each time giving up in frustration. This challenge came up on Sprite Stitch, "Royalty" and she was the first character that came to mind.

Typically I tend to stitch lesser known or less popular characters, but given how much I wanted to edit Merle into the likeness of the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, I had to do her. I started editing. Somehow, this time I got her hair to look pretty good and so continued to edit, the crown actually proving to be the hardest. Originally I was going to do her with reddish brown hair as per her NES sprites but artwork shows her with blonde hair and later games from SNES onward she's a blonde so I went with what's more known being as she's not some obscure princess. It took me all morning into the early afternoon to finish editing her, though I'm really surprised it didn't take longer, guess the time was right. So far to date she uses the most colors I've used in a single cross-stitch piece.

Originally I had started stitching her on black aida (in the darkness, afraid, in King Koopa's dungeon awaiting rescue) as this was something I used a lot for most of my cross-stitches over the years, but ever since I started stitching on the plastic stuff, now I have a hard time going back to aida. Once done I attached a large lobster claw to her so that I can hook her to my handbag or something, could even be an oversized necklace, anyway, options are open to many ways to wear or display, and that's what I like about the plastic opposed to the aida (just took me a while, me not taking to change very easily). Oh, one detail was left out, her sideburns. I didn't realize until I had already gotten into stitching, oh well, so today she decided to put those locks of hair back with the rest of her long hair to better display her pretty earrings.
