Tanooki Mario Quilt

Post by tnitnetny »

I learned how to quilt a few months ago because I wanted to learn how to make video game quilts. I have learned enough techniques to design and create one finally. This was a Christmas gift (and why I didn't do the challenge this time) for my boyfriend. He loves it.

I want to eventually make a lot of different sprites and open an etsy store. Maybe even have a website where I can make custom video game quilts for people. I know I can't make money, but it is a fun thing to do.

Amazing. I love the colors you chose for the background and edge. They really compliment it well.

Do you have any tips for doing a quilt like this? I've been debating starting a project like that but have no quilting experience to speak of.

I second this question...I've been borderline about to start making a yoshi one for the last 2 months.

Definitely, definitely take a few beginner quilt classes. I can sew pretty well and thought I could teach myself to quilt watching videos and reading books. I couldn't. Once I took a quilt class I did a lot of "Ohhhhhhh That's what they meant in the book" moments. Quilting is completely different then anything else. There are a lot of little tricks you need to learn including how to rotary cut.

I took my first quilt class in July and 3 classes later I was able to design and make this quilt. I took my classes from Joann Fabrics. They are really good classes and my instructors were great. Don't just try to dive in a figure it out. Fabric can get really expensive (it was $60 alone for the fabric for this quilt without the batting cost). If you cut something wrong then you are screwed and have to buy more fabric. Unlike stitching you can just take out.

Once you understand and learn the basic fundamentals of quilting, the cross stitch design programs can be used to figure out your design. I can definitely help people with that aspect once they are there.

I wouldn't even mind doing a quilt corner and helping people with their designs and colors and fabrics. :D

But take a class first! Trust me!

Edit: I forgot to mention you can't really see it in the pic, but the border fabric has bear paw prints! It is so adorable. It is a lot like this: http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog/prod ... xprd862755

I loved quilting so much if I can, I'll make quilts for the challenges in the future.

I really should get into this sort of sewing. One of these would make the best blanket...
