Question about plastic canvas

Post by megatonabomb »

Hello everyone,

I'm about to order supplies for a Christmas present I'm planning on making this year. I've never used plastic canvas before, so I did some searching on the forums about it and did find some helpful posts. Instead of necroposting on this topic viewtopic.php?f=8&t=6814&p=51860&hilit= ... tic#p51860 since my question doesn't have to do with perforated paper, I figured I would just start a new topic. I did a search online and couldn't find an answer. Is there any difference in how a finished project looks on plastic canvas mesh versus perforated plastic? I'm trying to figure out which one would be better to buy to make a picture frame out of. Thanks in advance!

OK, so you have the meshy type:

and you have the perforated type:

Mesh is generally a lower count with big square holes, usually best used with tapestry wools/yarns etc (or you can use the full six strands of embroidery thread). The perforated type (which I use for EVERYTHINNNNNGGGG) is normally 14ct (although I have seen in in 10ct before) with small round holes and is better for embroidery threads like we use for cross stitch. Sooooo...the big differences would be the size of the finished article and the amount of thread used.

If you're making a picture frame, I would recommend using the 14ct perforated stuff, it's a lot more robust and when stitched on your designs look like they would on 14ct aida.

I hope that helps!

In my personal opinion the second type indicated by blackmageheart is much better than the first type. Do you want to make the actual frame? If yes go totally for the second type and 14 counts.
I made several magnets with it and they turned out pretty nicely!
I am a self learner who started stitching in high school. After years of break I am finally back to cross stitching, thanks to this forum!
Going on projects:
- Wedding birds (framing phase)
- still undecided

I haven't made a frame, but I did mat a piece with plastic canvas that I sewed to the fabric, and it looked pretty darn good.
