Rookie Cross-Stitch Question on Fill

Hi!

I'm just starting to do the filling in on a piece with hearts and letters and I wanted to ask a really basic question about it as I haven't done any background fill work on Aida yet.

I have been stitching the same way each time, so that's not a problem. But I was wondering if I did the hearts vertically and did the space between the hearts horizontally would the stitching look weird? I ask because it would be easier to fill the space going horizontally but to do lettering and objects in the design vertically.

I'm probably overthinking all of this but any advice would be appreciated!

So do you mean like this:
X
X
X
X
X
Instead of this?:
XXXXX

If so, I would say, as long as the stitches look like Xs on the front, it shouldn't matter which way you go, at least it doesn't for my stitchings.
Hope that helps!

As long as your stitching is nice and even, and not too tight, then it will be fine vertical.

I know this is an older post, but I think it's important to point out that while it doesn't matter if you're going vertical or horizontal, the way that you do your Xs matters if you want your work to look even. The top thread of your X should always go in the same direction.
For example, All of your bottom thread of an X should go / while the top thread should always go \
