About the dying, here's how I'd proceed: you buy the dark blue dye, dilute it in water as per instructions. Then, holding your fabric horizontally, you let it drip. You can obtain different colors : if you put it in the dye all at once, and get it out also all at once, your color will be roughly the same everywhere. But you can get an "ombre" effect if you put it out of the dye progressively. It all depends on how much time the fabric takes to get dyed, so I guess you'll have to try ! I'd love to see the result !! I once found a great tutorial on the Martha Stewart website.
Another, much simpler option for the size of your project, is to use stencils. I did that, and it's much easier to handle than dye. You can make your own stencil for this easy pattern. All you have to do is buy some fabric paint and follow the instructions. I'd strongly recommend you wash the aida first, to get rid of this stuff they put on fabrics so they look shinier, because it may reject the paint. I'm curious to know how the aida fabric will react to paint (only done this with linen and plain cotton).
There are tons of informations on stenciling on the internet, but feel free to ask me if you have any question. I'm the happy owner of THE reference book by Lena Corwin, I can check it at any time.

(Does it show that I'm stuck at home with unoccupied crafty hands ?
