I'm not quite sure I follow all of this but -shrug- thought it might help. So to me it seems a mashup would fit because crossover is the broad category.By the way, there's a difference between mashup and crossover; a mashup is a specific form of crossover, where the elements of two fictions does not just meet, but are mangled together. If Batman is zapped into a cartoon by the Queen of Fables and meets the ponies, it's a crossover. If Rainbow Dash decides to disguise herself as one of Luna's chariot pullers and fight crime as Batmare, it's a mashup. If a bunch of soldiers from the Imperium of Man lands on a strange planet populated by equine Xenos who like bright colours and cake, it's a crossover. If the Imperium of Mare spreads out among the stars in an eternal future where there is only Party as God-Empress Celestia slumbers in the Golden Stall, it's a mashup. If Tarzan takes the wrong turn at Pellucidar and end up in the Everfree Forest, it's a crossover. If we have an alternate universe where Fluttershy was abandoned in the Zebrican jungle, was raised by monkeys and became Shy-Na, Queen of the Jungle, it's a mashup.

I found someone discussing it on the rpg.net MLP forums and this is what was said:

In old-skool terms that's saying that if Jessica Fletcher goes to solve a mystery with Magnum PI, it's a crossover. If Jessica Fletcher wears a hideous shirt and mustache and pretends she's cool, that's a mashup.
Anyhoo...I did say you guys could interpret this challenge your own way, so if your crossover happens to be a mashup as well, then it's ok.

Re: MARCH Challenge - Crossovers!
Ok. I think mine fits enough. It's not really a mash-up in the way the paragraph describes but would probably be considered a mash-up to most of the Internet because it's two things that wouldn't normally go together being put together into something different. However, both sprites are from two different video games so I'm going to say it's a crossover.
