So I had this idea for a while, and Im nearing completion of this bookmark that has some of the Pokemon menu icons from Gold and Silver.

The issue is the cloth degraded a little while i was stitching. i was planning on cutting out a piece of fabric and hot gluing it to the back of the project (with maybe a piece of cardboard in the middle) in order to hide the stitching on the back, but now I am afraid this will come unraveled over time.

I do plan to fill the surrounding area with white thread. i was thinking i could fold the edge over, and while I stitch the white in, just pull the needle through two layers of aida? would that work or would that cause the fabric to tear over time? I would guess this issue comes up whenever somebody makes a bookmark. There has to be some solution for having a project where the open edges need to be exposed to wear and tear, just wanted to know what it was.

Sure, you can fold the edge over and stitch through both layers, that will secure it - just be careful as you do because that edge looks like it'll fray easily if it's handled a lot. You can either fold it and pop a running stitch through it or you could do cross stitch but you'd have to really take your time with that!
