Homestar Runner character scene (WIP)

Post by BikdipOnABus »

This is my first big project, though I suppose the word "big" is subjective. It's certainly not as big as other stuff I've seen people do, but it's a project that will certainly take me a few months to finish, so I thought posting progress pictures for it would be interesting.

If you haven't heard of Homestar Runner before, you're probably not going to understand what most of the stuff in the image is, but basically, I tried to cram together all of the main characters and some of the secondary ones, along with references to other things on the website, and put it all into one image.

Here's a slightly outdated version of the image I'm going off of:
Image

I made this pattern myself in MS Paint. This doesn't show any of the backstitching, so quite a few of the details are lost (character eyes, mouths, etc, plus there's going to be a large image of the Teen Girl Squad characters on the fence, and some text on Bubs's sign and The Paper), but you can get the overall idea of it.

If anyone's interested in doing this project, just let me know and I can post an updated version of the pattern I'm using - every once in a while I notice little issues with it and will change a couple pixels here and there. I'll also link to the plans I have for the backstitching details.

Progress Shot #1:

Completed so far: H*R logo, Pom Pom (no eyes), Homestar (no eyes), Blue Laser minions (no visors), Blue Laser Commander (no eye / eyepatch)

Progress shot set #2

Image
Everything together. Added since last time:
- added eyes to Pom Pom, Homestar, and Blue Laser Commander
- Marzipan (complete except dress detail and outlining)
- Strong Bad (complete except outlining)
- The Cheat (complete except outlining)
- Gunhaver, Crackotage, Silent Rip, Fightgar (pretty much just the yellow parts)
- bits of Eh Steve and the tire

There's a couple changes here from the sample picture in the original post. Mainly that Fightgar and Reynold have changed places (it makes more sense this way), and that I made some tweaks to make Strong Bad look a lot better than the original design. I also gave him some quarter stitches, as you might be able to tell from his mask design. I won't be doing this for most of the characters, but since SB is one of the most important characters, I think he could use some extra detail. I'm now wishing that I had done the same to Homestar, but I might be able to go over the star on his shirt with backstitching or something to make it look better.

By request, here's what the Teen Girl Squad characters will look like on the fence, along with a couple other things.

Next time I post an update, I'll upload the current pattern with all the changes I've made since the start.

It's been quite a while since the last update, because I've been working on other projects here and there. I finished a pretty decent chunk of it though, so here's some update shots.

Added since last time:
- Strong Mad (mostly complete except outlining and hand detail)
- Stop sign
- Reynold and part of Firebert
- Completed Gunhaver, Fightgar, and most of Crackotage and Silent Rip
- All the dirt (exciting, I know, but at least I got it out of the way)

The only things missing from this clump are the gray parts, because the shades of gray I have access to aren't quite as varied as I'd like. So I don't really want to commit to a certain thread number for each shade until I'm sure I have all the shades I need. Here's a recent thing I made with a lot of gray in it, and it didn't turn out quite as good as I wanted it.

(It's an inside joke.)

Finally, here's the current pattern with updates, as promised:
