Advice for finishing a project

So my first cross stitch project was a massive undertaking. In fact I'm still not done it.

Here it is so far (sorry for the crappy quality):

How do you guys think the fade out (in the bottom right corner) looks? I don't really want to finish this by doing all of the random colours the pattern calls for to make it a rectangle. Does the fade out work?

I think I'm going to aim for a narrower fade out band more like right at the corner of the page (if that makes sense).
