Blanket in the making...

So, after I finished my UP 2 years ago and last week I finished the red one as well (which was a WIP for the last 2 years), I started on a new project: A (baby-) blanket. I had a few skeins of yarn lying around (pink, red, white and black) and wanted something to make with it. So I thought back on a stitching project of a year back and I had it: It will be Birdo!

So, the plan was:
- 720 granny squares
- 20x36
- And when all is done, a single round of double crochets to finish!

After 1 week, I allready got 6 rows done and joined on the horizontal lines and a small pile of grannys waiting for the rest of their rows to be joined.

This is my pattern:

Looking good so far! But that's a lot of granny squares! How big is each square?

Also, I'm promising myself I WILL crochet a blanket sometime :D

I'm also planning an epic blanket, but I'm thinking it'll be a Shyguy! Although I think I'd cry if I had to make that many granny squares!

Tnx all!
720, yes... its mind-boggling, but seeing as I managed to make 120 in 1 weeks time (normal week, with 32 hours of work and familiy-time to add), it makes me think I can really do this in a few weeks time. The joining really takes time and is a tedious job. But it has to be done. Joining the rows is fun, cause you can see your progress instantly... joining the columns later is less fun but has to be done. So i'm trying to do that now in between making new squares, for the 6 rows I've done now...

I;m joining by the methodes of Lucy/Attic24: http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/joini ... aures.html It's relativly quick and easy to do... except when you are trying to join black squares at nighttime :banghead: So i'll save that for daytime...

Luckily, I found out this weekend I can do 1 square in less than 4 minutes and my daughter (2,5y) loves to cut the thread at the end of a squares, so she now request me crocheting and helping me ;)
Oh and the squares are about 3-4cm (1-1,5 inch) big when not joined... when I join them, the shrink a little. I'll try and measure the work tonight as to get an idea of how big it will be in the end.

I'm currently making a 1up blanket with granny squares like yours but i am joining the squares together as i make each square.

I never liked making pictures with granny squares as i didn't like the bumped up effect you get after joining them, so when i saw a tutorial on how to join as you make them i was so happy that i can make these type of blankets again :)

i was thinking of making a yoshi one next as my brother really likes him, and i also have a pattern for a bowser one which is going to be huge.

Yours look very lovely and i can not wait to see the new one finished :)

Here's a new update, I've decided to make 6 rows at a time and then join the 6 6-rows together in the end. Last night I had the next 5 rows finished (but took a picture at 4, and almost got all the squares for the last row of these 6 done...

Each 6-row I join the vertical lines in the mean time, so O don't have to do those at the end. I'm nearly finished with the first 6-row... so nice timing, as I can do this for the new 6-row that I'm almost finished with while making new squares :D
