Beadweaving - Geeky Charms and Earrings! (Updated 14/08)

Post by Skels »

I've been trying to get brave enough to post these, but hell, it's what I do and what led me here, so here you go :)

I've got myself hooked on making little pixel art charms by stitching 2mm seed beads together. I love making these little guys, slowly watching the image coming together, and I'm usually pretty pleased with the outcome. I use strong nylon thread instead of jewelry wire, which means that the finished items have a wonderful flexability and softness to them, rather than being rigid. I started attaching them to little phone charm lanyards, just to give them a purpose!

Here are some of my favourite ones to make:

Recently I had a go at turning some space invaders into earrings, and - IMHO - they worked pretty well. Also pictured are some blocker Lemmings:

Problem is, I have a rather short attention span. And while I love making new ones and starting new designs, I can't stick with a big project. I used to think I was running out of nice small designs to do, but then I came here! Now I have a huge list of ideas

Update: Thought I'd add some more pictures of the earrings I've been making lately. Some folks on Etsy even liked a couple enough to buy them! =D

Coming up with small patterns is tough though, so I'm now starting a new project turning them into fridge magnets. I hope to have a fridge of Space Invaders battling it out very soon!

those earrings are awesome :o i would totally wear them if i could wear earrings like that^^

i'm scared to use beaded cell phone straps because my phone is beat up a lot ;P i give er hell, so i'm scared i would break it^^; but they are awesome too, for those who are more delicate with their phones XD

the ds has a place for a strap (but i beat that up too tho, lol)

I totally forgot about the DS - good shout.

I know they look delicate, but the nylon thread is surprisingly tough stuff. The great thing about how these are made too is that even if you do get a thread breaking for some reason, the beads don't come unravelled as they are individually stitched to each other bead around them. A made a rather large Dizzy charm for a friend back when I started making these. He had a thread come loose after a few months but didn't lose a single bead.

Of course, there's no defence against yanking the lanyard too hard, or impalling the charm on a spike of some sort ;)

So glad you like the earrings! I haven't had a lot of feedback on them yet. So yay!

This is such an awesome idea! I would totally wear earrings like that all the time and make everyone I know jealous :P The cell straps too, although I'd also be afraid of it breaking. Good to know it wouldn't completely fall apart though. Please keep posting stuff you make!

These are so nice! I used to weave beads to make necklaces, but I just can't figure out how you did this! They are the best! I'd love to make some for my phone :)
