Sprite Stitch Board!

I've made a few of these, this one was printed with white PLA filament and colored with marker. The pipe and leaves were done with green and the stem is a simple colored pencil.

I love this!

When I first saw it, I thought, "Now that's one well-done papercraft!"

I didn't expect to see 3D printing here, but in hindsight I wonder why we haven't seen more. This is really good - I never would have guessed it was colored with marker; it's so evenly done.

Oh man, that is seriously cool!

And I agree, the colouring is so even that I never would have guessed that the filament wasn't already that colour.

What sort of 3D printer did you use, out of curiousity?

I used prismacolor markers for the coloring, they work pretty well on white.

I've got a MakerBot Replicator 2.

Also, Prismacolour stuff is really nice, if not a little hard to get hold of over here. I've used some of their soft-core coloured pencils in a past project, and they worked out nicely.

Probably due to the relatively high costs for 3D printers at the moment. They're not that mainstream yet and as such everyone is paying early adopter costs.

Once more breakthroughs happen in regards to home models, I'm sure a lot more people will adopt the medium.

I tend to be interested in wargaming and at the moment 3D printers for personal use can not replicate the more expensive high end commercial products. It's a shame though because eventually this will medium will be amazing (as if it isn't already).

Eventually, we'll be able to print anything... Including spare body parts. (Biological 3D printers are being developed at the moment)

I would like one just to print voxel versions of NES sprites.

Until then, we've always got services like Shapeways.com, at least! (And they have some handy tools and links to more handy tools for those of us who are 3D-modelling deficient, too - including one for creating and printing three-dimensional versions of 8-bit sprites.)
